Storage Units: Handy Spaces for Seasonal Items

Apr 3rd, 2011 Lawrence White

Have you ever looked around and simply said, 'We've got too much stuff and it's time to find a spot to store some of it.' Most people at some point or another realise that they've got more furnishings and more personal belongings than they have storage space in their house!

When that happens, it's time to take a good look at either rotating some of the things you own or find somewhere suitable to store them. Many people opt for storing them for part of the year and then taking them out for part of the year. In fact, when it appears to you as if you've come very close to outgrowing your home, the most cost effective way to manage that isn't to go and buy a new house, it's to rent a storage space in order to keep some of the things that you really don't use every day. The truth is that you may not have more things than you have space. You simply may be storing a great many items in your home that you just don't use on a daily basis. We've all got a great many things that we can't use every day. Those take up more space than you might imagine and when you add them up, they are using room that you could be using for something else.

Just a few ideas that may be viable options to help you to cut down on the clutter in your home will be to store things such as seasonal items in a storage unit. Many people have a vast array of different decorations that they love and want to use each year. The reality is that they don't have room to store them.

Items that may be well suited to go into a self storage unit and be retrieved at the appropriate time of the year will be:

1. Summer clothing.
2. Summer curtains and home furnishing items.
3. Holiday (Christmas, Halloween, Easter) decorating items.
4. Heavy quilts or bedding items.
5. Winter coats and boots.

All of these items are things that you do need to keep and to have on hand each year, but they are also items that you would prefer not to have taking up space in the closets or wardrobes of a smaller home. In cases such as these, self storage units can literally be a godsend, offering you back some of the space in your home so that you may actually have room in that wardrobe for the clothing, footwear and jackets that you're wearing now.

Storing seasonal items and decorations in storage areas will be helpful to rid you of the clutter and give yourself a great deal of extra space. It will amaze you, once those seasonal items are stored in a well-appointed self storage area, how much space that it actually frees up for you to use day to day. You may find that your home isn't nearly as small as you thought it was!
